Adriana Lima for Jason Wu

Adriana Lima was just rehired as the face of Maybelline and now she can be seen featured in Jason Wu’s Fall 2014 campaign – the designer has compared the Brazilian Victoria’s Secret Angel to Bianca Jagger.

The ad, shot by Inez & Vinoodh at the Four Seasons, is the latest in Wu’s ‘Supermodel Supper Club’ series of campaigns that have featured Karen Elson posing at Indochine and Christy Turlington against the backdrop of Mr. Chow.

Is Lima the next Gisele?

In other campaign news… Lupita Nyong’o’s first ad for Lancôme has been released and it’s flawless (her skin, that is).

Naomi Campbell to design own label

Supermodel and TV show host Naomi Campbell is apparently in negotiations to design a clothing line. The Eighties wonder has been approached by multiple brands about collaborations. Will it be high street or high end? No one knows yet – but we are bursting with excitement!

About the news, Campbell said: ‘I will design not just for women of colour, but for all. I see there’s lots of things that are not there that I feel that I’d like to have, and so I’d like to share it with everybody.’

Avon lays off 600 employees

It might become more and more difficult to find an Avon lady, as 600 employees have just been laid off. Following a loss of $167-million in the first quarter of 2014, the company is doing some major restructuring. The ginormous cutbacks are expected to save Avon $50-million to $55-million before taxes each year. The company hopes to save $400-million by 2016.

Nigerian singer offers to trade places with Boko Haram captured schoolgirls

Adokiye Kyrian has offered her virginity to Boko Haram to #bringbackourgirls. The singer said, ‘Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them … is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange.’ She went as far to say that ‘even if 10 to 12 men have to take me every night, I don’t care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents.’

What do you think of her offer?

Has Madonna completely lost the plot?

Known for her strange Instagram behaviour – ie posting the strangest selfies – Madonna is at it again, this time posting a picture of herself wearing a burqua, complete with bars over the face, captioning the photo: ‘Its that kind of day! #unapologeticb****’. This was just the latest in a string of edgy pictures shared by the superstar online. She recently posted a picture wearing a tiara with the word ‘B****’ in diamonds and the unapologetic hashtag.

5 great pieces of info

James McAvoy for Prada

Prada sure has an unusual taste in men. Not to complain. Last year the mega fashion brand brought us Christoph Waltz, Ben Whishaw and Ezra Miller; and now it’s Scottish actor James McAvoy who is the new face for their Fall/Winter 2014 campaign.

The only image of the campaign released so far has been very well received. Shot in black and white by Annie Leibovitz, it features a moody McAvoy strolling on a concrete embankment on a (presumably English?) beach. Fighting the cold, the actor is impeccably dressed from head to toe in Prada, of course.

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s brilliant stab at paparazzi culture

Not the first to use the ever-present paparazzi for a good cause, but one of our favourite Hollywood couples, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, made headlines yesterday when they both held up signs while being followed by the paparazzi on the street.

The signs read:

Good morning! We were eating and saw a group of guys with cameras outside. And so we thought, let’s try this again. We don’t need the attention, but these wonderful organisations do: (and don’t forget:)

Here’s to the stuff that really matters. Have a great day!

Love this!

GIFs on Twitter

Twitter has just announced that GIFs – previously relegated mostly to Tumblr and Buzzfeed lists – will now be supported by Twitter. Yay! You’ll be able to view GIFs in your Twitter feed in the same way you would JPEG images. (It’s not automatic, though: you’ll have to click for it to work.)

This functionality should definitely help lessen online rage caused by annoying imagery.

Kim K’s new app

Lending her voice and likeness to a new mobile game called ‘Kim Kardashian Hollywood’, the reality star’s app hits the App Store next week. Kardashian posted the trailer of the game on Instagram, saying: ‘Excited to announce the new #KimKardashianGamelaunches next week on the App Store and Google Play! Check out the trailer…’

We’re sad to admit it, but this game will probably make her millions…

Julius brings the house down

Controversial EFF leader Julius Malema caused quite a stir yesterday as he made his first speech as a Member of Parliament at the National Assembly. Watch the below video for some of his ‘gems’ of wisdom:

Your guide to the Soccer World Cup sex rules

The action tends to happen on the field – and for some players there is no action whatsoever allowed off the field. That’s right, many players have been banned by their coaches from having sex for the duration of the World Cup, because they believe that sex can decrease a player’s performance during a match.

Annie Leibovitz dropped Kimye just before wedding day?

At a recent Cannes Lions event, Kanye West claimed that world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz backed out of snapping their wedding at the last minute, forcing them to get inventive.

‘Let me tell you something about that kiss photo that my girl put up. This was pissing my girl off during the honeymoon, she was exhausted because we worked on the photo so much because Annie Leibovitz pulled out right before the wedding. I think that she was, like, scared of the idea of celebrity.’

Apparently West himself ended up Photoshopping the above photo – now the most liked pic on Instagram ever – for four days to get that floral wall just right. Shame.

Zuma focuses on South African economy

Last night, during his state of the nation address, President Jacob Zuma emphasised the need for economic growth – saying he hoped to lift annual growth to 5% by 2019. Zuma also took direct responsibility for improving social conditions, especially in the mining industry, which has experienced crippling strikes over the last two years.

He spoke about the need for decent work creation in a fight against poverty, which aims to better SA’s struggling economy. ‘To achieve (the target), we will embark on various measures and interventions to jump-start the economy. We have (thus) set this target during a difficult period.’

Any thoughts?

Kendall Jenner for Givenchy

After donning the pelvic bone dress that caused a massive media frenzy, we thought the teenager would take a bit of a rest. But no, being an It girl takes work. Jenner can now be seen in the latest ad campaign for Givenchy. Shot by Mert & Marcus and featured alongside models Jamie Bochert and Mariacarla Boscono, as well as Stephanie Seymour’s son Peter Brant Jr, Jenner looks fantastic in the Fall designs.

Speaking of young, up-and-coming models, Jude Law’s son has just made his modelling debut. Rafferty Law, 17, recently strutted down the runway for DKNY’s menswear show in London. He has been signed to Select Model Management, which means we’ll be seeing a lot of him in the future. Not that we mind…

Gisele Bündchen replaces Kate Moss

Named the face of Chanel No. 5 and a string of other high-fashion and beauty brands, the Brazilian sensation is now fronting the Fall campaign for Stuart Weitzman. The brand ended their longstanding partnership with Kate Moss, allowing Bündchen this opportunity.

‘Gisele [is] such a seasoned professional. She exemplifies the Stuart Weitzman woman with her zest of life, love and family,’ said Weitzman.

Lovely ad.

Transgender model featured in Sofia Coppola’s The Little Mermaid

When we first heard about Sofia Coppola’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid we were, well, a bit sceptical. Don’t expect a feel-good Disney-esque fairy tale either, as Coppola has promised that her interpretation, due for release next year, will have a darker twist. Rumours have been swirling that Emma Watson, who starred in Coppola’s Bling Ring, would play Ariel, while androgynous Bosnian model Andrej Pejic will also be featured.

His part is vaguely titled ‘Sister #4’, so we presume he will be playing one of Ariel’s beautiful siblings.

Talking about beautiful, model of the moment Cara Delevingne is in the news again, this time for mentioning that she would never want her daughter to be a model. ‘I get a lot of girls who say, I just want to be a model so badly. And I think: you can do better than that.’ One of the world’s most sought-after models herself, Delevingne seems to be moving further away from the fashion world as she has been trying her hand at acting. The model has said in the past that the fashion industry makes her feel like a puppet or a mannequin.

Gisele Bündchen to present the 2014 FIFA World Cup Trophy

The world’s highest paid model, Gisele Bündchen , has been chosen to present the winning team of the 2014 World Cup with the FIFA World Cup Trophy at the Maracana Mário Filho Stadium in Rio de Janeiro – set to take place on 13 July 2014. The prestigious trophy will be presented in a custom-made Louis Vuitton case…

Prince George takes his first steps

Prince George probably gave Prince William the best Father’s Day gift this year. The tiny tot took his first steps on Sunday at a charity polo match. Meticulously dressed in a white polo shirt, red seersucker overalls and navy pre-walker shoes, the prince seemed to trot along the field like a little pony, while holding his mother’s hand tightly. So adorable.

Michael Schumacher out of coma

After months in a coma, caused when he hit his head in a skiing accident, Michael Schumacher is reported to be showing some improvement. The former Formula 1 champion driver has been taken out of a rehabilitation centre in France and placed in a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is now able to breathe without assistance, and can stay awake for longer. The news has brought a fresh wave of support and exitement from his many fans, but doctors warn that his recovery could still take time and are sceptical of a full recovery.

We can only hope that he continues to do well.

Can Zuma reassure us?

The streets leading to Parliament in Cape Town have been blocked off and preparations are being made for tonight’s State of the Nation address. Our nation’s ‘state’ is worrying right now, with platinum-mining strikes harming the country’s economy and making foreign investors nervous – and growth rates have slowed too. Will Zuma’s speech focus on these issues? Will promises be made?

Was Kanye actually a groomzilla?

A lavish wedding in Florence for Kim K and Kanye seemed to go all too smoothly. Was it Kim’s special touch or perhaps her manager mom who kept everything running perfectly? Neither, it seems.

It has now come to light that Kanye, an infamous perfectionist, was the man behind every tiny detail of the couple’s wedding day. A new photo posted by Khloé Kardashian on Twitter shows the groom addressing the family and bridesmaids, while clearly giving instructions and gesticulating while the family of women listen intently.

Diane Kruger to design bag for Jason Wu

Actress and Chanel muse Diane Kruger is apparently going to collaborate on a new signature handbag with acclaimed designer Jason Wu. The bag will be aptly dubbed ‘Diane’. You’ll thus be able to get your hands on a little of her chic sense of style, but at a price, we’re sure. Kruger is also busy shooting her latest Chanel ad campaign right now in Los Angeles with famed photographer Peter Lindbergh.

Petition asks Beyoncé to comb her daughter’s hair has launched a petition for singer Beyoncé to comb her daughter’s hair. Ridiculous, we know. Recent pictures show Beyoncé and Jay Z returning from a weekend in the beautiful Hamptons in New York, with baby Blue Ivy rocking that ‘out of bed’ look. The world took notice and found this very distressing for some reason. Let babies just be babies, we say…

The petition, now with 85 signatures, calls upon the couple to take better care of their child’s hair.

Gold-smugglers caught

A multi-billion-rand gold-smuggling syndicate was busted in Johannesburg yesterday. Miners (supposedly only earning R11 000 a month) were living all-too-extravagant lifestyles on big farms and in luxury homes – more than a little suspicious. Hawks officers arrested 18 of them in a raid on the Sibanye Gold Mine in Carletonville after a six-month clandestine police operation. The miners, believed to have stolen about R2-billion worth of gold in the past year, are believed to have links elsewhere in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The men used specially designed bags fitted inside their overalls to steal the gold.

Mila Kunis talks being pregnant

Most online media sites are reporting on Mila Kunis’s apparent ‘rant’ on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Tuesday night. We just call it ‘telling it like it is’.

The host remarked to Kunis that he and his wife are also pregnant and are having a baby. A heavily pregnant Kunis responded with: ‘Oh, you’re both having a baby. You and your wife are pregnant?’

Pulling out her microphone, she stepped off the stage and started asked men to stop saying that ‘they are also pregnant’. Watch it below and tell us what you think of her candid speech.

5 of today’s best talking points

Clint Eastwood’s son shows off great genes in new campaign

Scott Eastwood, the 28-year-old model and actor son of the legendary Clint Eastwood, can now be seen in the latest ad campaign for Hugo Boss. We are also very excited about his new film, called Jersey Boys, which is set to be released later this month.

Hugo Boss is known for its classic designs (especially since Jason Wu became the brand’s artistic director), and Eastwood makes a great ambassador, looking dashing and very suave in the campaign. What do you think?

Talking ad campaigns, Diesel’s pre-Fall ads are out. Featuring beautiful creations by creative director Nicola Formichetti, the campaign has been dubbed the ‘Neo-Neoclassical Campaign’. Leather features heavily, which looks fantastic in this context.

Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn get BFF tattoos

We all know that these two are basically inseparable. The pair decided not to get matching BFF bracelets, rather opting for matching double-D tattoos – for Dunn and Delevingne. Posting the above picture of their new ink, the British models hashtagged their post with #throwsomedsonthat.

Delevingne is also in the news today for announcing her designer collaboration with the great Donna Karan! Sharing the news on Instagram (who even needs PR any more?!) she said: ‘Get Ready!!! It’s Coming… #Cara4DKNY’, along with a picture of what appears to be the official logo for the collection.

The collection will be a 15-piece range that will include beanies, T-shirts and a leather motorcycle jacket with removable sleeves. In addition, models will have the opportunity to get involved in the collab, as Delevingne will be casting one or two of the models to be featured in the DKNY campaign herself.

Robben Island fence to be sold

Once encircling the prison where South Africa’s foremost political prisoners were kept, the fence on the infamous island is now being sold, piece by piece. The Robben Island Fence initiative aims to see the pieces incorporated into artworks – from paintings to photographs. The founder of this brilliant idea, Jacques De Bruin, said that for every piece sold, 10% goes to a charity that supports entrepreneurship.

‘We want to promote the arts through the sale of the fence,’ said De Bruin. ‘We are selling a story… We want people to look beyond the fence in their lives to achieve their greatness, just like Madiba did.’

To date 250 to 300 pieces have been sold.

Disney darlings at war?

It seems that Miley Cyrus is seriously hating on fellow Disney star Selena Gomez. During her now notorious Bangerz concert – which has been the subject of much controversy because of the star’s somewhat inappropriate antics on stage – Cyrus showed the audience exactly how she felt about Gomez in Milan. She hurled a cardboard cutout of Gomez into the audience while singing her hit ‘F U’. Did the two have a fallout? Guess so.

Angelina Jolie’s moving speech

Known for her philanthropic and humanitarian work, the Maleficent star kicked off the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London yesterday with an incredibly moving speech. The Oscar-winning actress, mother of six and UN envoy is co-hosting the four-day conference with William Hague, Britain’s Foreign Secretary.

She said: ‘It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict. There is nothing inevitable about it. It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It is nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power. It is done to torture and humiliate innocent people and often very young children. I have met survivors from Afghanistan to Somalia and they are just like us, with one crucial difference: we live in safe countries with doctors we can go to when we are hurt, police we can turn to when we are wronged, and institutions that protect us. They live in refugee camps or bombed-out streets in areas where there is no law, no protection and not even the hope of justice. They struggle to keep their children safe, and if they admit to being raped, they are likely to face more violence and social rejection.’

CFDA 2014: The best and the worst

Last night, celebrities and designers got some much-needed recognition from the fashion industry. Held in New York City, the annual CFDA Awards guests included Lupita Nyong’o, Blake Lively, Alexander Wang and, of course, Anna Wintour. The talk of the night was Rihanna, who was there to accept the fashion Icon award. The singer showed up in a transparent, crystal-embellished fishnet dress with matching gloves and headdress designed by young American designer Adam Selman.

‘The point is to be audacious … while being true to yourself,’ Anna Wintour said of Rihanna‘s approach to style when presenting her with her award. We agree.

Nominations for the prestigious awards were submitted by the Fashion Guild, a group of some 1 500 CFDA members, consisting of fashion editors, retailers and stylists. See the full list of winners here.

Rihanna in Adam Selman. Perhaps a controversial choice, as it is almost 90% sheer. Yet, we are loving the Gatsby vibe. If only it had a slip… Alessandra Ambrosio, a vision in red. Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen doing power dressing…and oh-so-well. Solange Knowles back to her true fashionable form in this shimmering Calvin Klein number. Olivia Palermo in an Ann Taylor flapper-inspired top and skirt, carrying a Lulu Guinness clutch. Blake Lively in a simple, but stunning dress by Michael Kors. The queen of prints, the extraordinary, Diane von Furstenberg. WORST Heidi Klum’s form-unflattering gown is a cascading nightmare… We love Iman’s style, yet this is a nightmare in different shades of blue. Usually on point, Marion Cotillard’s flaps resemble elephant ears… Over the top make-up paired with a busy look is a bit too much for us Lupita. Sorry. Keri Russell looks like she got caught in some kind of whirlwind… Was this an attempt to cover her cleavage? Don’t just stick a piece of fabric in there, girl. Images via Rex Features

Coveting everything from CHANEL’s 2014/2015 cruise collection shown in Dubai

Karl Lagerfeld has done it again. He recently presented the CHANEL 2014/2015 Cruise show on The Island in Dubai, the pearl of the United Arab Emirates. At sunset and with the futuristic megalopolis skyline as the backdrop, the designer offered a Cruise trip from the Orient to the Occident.

In the emblematic colour palette of CHANEL, white, black and beige and even dark blue – with touches of fuchsia, midnight blue, red and floral prints, Karl Lagerfeld reinterpreted certain elements from oriental art with contemporary lines and forms.

Three piece suits and trompe l’oeil trousers, wide legged and skinny trousers, long and mini tunics, short overalls, pleated blouses, jackets and boleros with three-quarter length sleeves, the collection is one of femininity, audacious and refined. Why can’t I afford this stuff again?
