This colonial-inspired restaurant and bar set in a magnificent Victorian house on one of Cape Town’s top foodie streets is a true gem. Kloof Street House is not only beautifully decorated with unique pieces but features a magnificent old-world bar made entirely from vintage travelling cases. It’s a great spot for a romantic date, too, as the front garden’s al fresco dining area is drenched in charm.
But the best part about this restaurant is the food (as it should be).
Prepared by Head Chef Richie Tewnion, who has trained under Jamie Oliver, the fare includes beer-battered fish with minted peas, indulgent starters (whole baked Camembert with caramelized onions and homemade cranberry jelly), award-winning Moroccan lamb rump and, if you need to indulge your sweet tooth, chocolate fondant. There’s really something for every taste, from grilled calamari and ravioli to beef fillet with hand-cut fries and Café de Paris butter – using locally grown, super-fresh produce. Completely yum.
