Princest diaries

A new rape awareness (specifically relating to incest) campaign targeting minors who have been subject to sexual abuse by a family member use Disney princesses and their on-screen fathers to drive the message home. The aim of the poster series is to encourage victims to report their cases in order for the authorities to prevent it from happening again. Just brilliant as looking at this made me cringe.

The most outrageous wedding dresses the catwalk’s ever seen

From the outrageous to the down-right ugly. We’ve rounded up a few wedding dresses that are hardly for the faint-hearted, but rather for those wanting to put on a show:

Hot dog anyone?

Absolutely Fabulous comes to mind…

A tad poofy for our taste…

A feather duster comes to mind…

Now this we like – all that drama…

The reindeer-warrior bride

Playboy bride…

Modern vs traditional floaty wonders: Chanel and Reem Acra

When picking a dress for your big day, be sure to consider the following: are you modern and a bit quirky or rather more traditional? Either way, Chanel and Reem Acra have some spot-on answers, tailor-made for your needs. Be inspired:

Chanel has a way of updating a classic, giving it that floaty, feminine edge. We love Karl Lagerfeld for this. Theses 3 dresses prove that over and over again:

Reem Acra’s designs speak to the traditional bride, who seeks a beautifully constructed gown, that’s not too over the top or voluminous:

Which is your favourite designer?

Missibaba launches colour-block capsule collection

Missibaba designer Chloe Townsend and creative partner Lizel Strydom recently launched a capsule collection using colourful leathers sourced on their South American travels. The designs are a true celebration of sixties-inspired colour, adding delightful pops and retro glamour to a simple navy or black ensemble this winter.

There are so many covetable pieces – the collection has added two new bag styles and a new jewellery item. Pieces within the collection are in keeping with the colour-block theme – single colour panes broken into interesting shapes and framed in matt navy.

Truly captivating, unique and African.

Woman Photoshopped dozens of times to suit various beauty standards

In a very interesting new experiment that went viral yesterday, 24-year-old radio journalist Esther Honig had her picture Photoshopped by people from 25 different countries. She told the designers to ‘make her look beautiful’ according to their country’s assumed beauty standards: from skin lightening and excessive make-up to strange ’dos and jewellery.

‘They are intriguing and insightful in their own right; each one is a reflection of both the personal and cultural concepts of beauty that pertain to their creator. Photoshop allows us to achieve our unobtainable standards of beauty, but when we compare those standards on a global scale, achieving the ideal remains all the more illusive,’ Honig said.

What do you think of these images? We think they speak volumes about how much focus the world puts on appearance.

Sleeping in Doha airport

Seeing that Doha is a regular pit-stop for travellers (sometimes for up to 12 hours), without much to do, people are seen sleeping in any spot they can find or feel comfortable in. David du Toit snapped a few of these sleepy travellers during his own stop-over.

Why does the ‘perfect’ woman look so … imperfect?

We live in a perfection-seeking age, where fake breasts are preferred over real ones and plumped-up lips to au naturel (usually much thinner) versions. So I have to ask: what do we consider to be beautiful today?

E! Online recently conducted a poll asking their audience which female celebrity body parts they thought were the most beautiful/coveted. The team then ‘glued’ these parts together to create a super-woman of sorts. However, the ‘perfect female specimen’ turned out to look more like Franken-Barbie than Hollywood-Barbie.

The winners were: best hair – Carrie Underwood, best stomach – Rihanna’s abs (plus underboob tattoo), while Sofia Vergara’s boobs and Blake Lively’s stunning toned pins won their respective categories.

What do you think of this glued-together super-blah of a woman?

Today’s top stories

Adriana Lima for Jason Wu

Adriana Lima was just rehired as the face of Maybelline and now she can be seen featured in Jason Wu’s Fall 2014 campaign – the designer has compared the Brazilian Victoria’s Secret Angel to Bianca Jagger.

The ad, shot by Inez & Vinoodh at the Four Seasons, is the latest in Wu’s ‘Supermodel Supper Club’ series of campaigns that have featured Karen Elson posing at Indochine and Christy Turlington against the backdrop of Mr. Chow.

Is Lima the next Gisele?

In other campaign news… Lupita Nyong’o’s first ad for Lancôme has been released and it’s flawless (her skin, that is).

Naomi Campbell to design own label

Supermodel and TV show host Naomi Campbell is apparently in negotiations to design a clothing line. The Eighties wonder has been approached by multiple brands about collaborations. Will it be high street or high end? No one knows yet – but we are bursting with excitement!

About the news, Campbell said: ‘I will design not just for women of colour, but for all. I see there’s lots of things that are not there that I feel that I’d like to have, and so I’d like to share it with everybody.’

Avon lays off 600 employees

It might become more and more difficult to find an Avon lady, as 600 employees have just been laid off. Following a loss of $167-million in the first quarter of 2014, the company is doing some major restructuring. The ginormous cutbacks are expected to save Avon $50-million to $55-million before taxes each year. The company hopes to save $400-million by 2016.

Nigerian singer offers to trade places with Boko Haram captured schoolgirls

Adokiye Kyrian has offered her virginity to Boko Haram to #bringbackourgirls. The singer said, ‘Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them … is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange.’ She went as far to say that ‘even if 10 to 12 men have to take me every night, I don’t care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents.’

What do you think of her offer?

Has Madonna completely lost the plot?

Known for her strange Instagram behaviour – ie posting the strangest selfies – Madonna is at it again, this time posting a picture of herself wearing a burqua, complete with bars over the face, captioning the photo: ‘Its that kind of day! #unapologeticb****’. This was just the latest in a string of edgy pictures shared by the superstar online. She recently posted a picture wearing a tiara with the word ‘B****’ in diamonds and the unapologetic hashtag.

Panormos Beach, Mykonos

On a recent trip to Mykonos island, I took the advice from a Greek woman I met in Athens, and visited the secluded beach of Panormos. Situated on the north side of the island – quite far from where we were staying at the old port – my fiancé and I got up around 8am, had breakfast of cheese, bread and boiled eggs and hopped on our scooters. Off we went!

Most of Mykonos’ more commercial beaches have sunbathing chairs for rent, usually about 5 euros. On Panormos beach you’ll find an even more comfortable option: extra large beach cushions for free! The only condition is that you buy a drink or order some food from the fabulous adjacent restaurant – something we were planning to do anyway.

We had beers and frappes as we took in the most spectacular scenery and had a dip in the chilly, yet super refreshing ocean. A perfect day, and a must-visit spot!
